Just when it appeared as if everything was set for WBC Heavyweight champion Oleg Maskaev to defend his title against number one ranked Samuel Peter yet another wrench was thrown into the already lengthy and complex negotiations for the fight. Duva Boxing, Peter's promoter along with Don King, defaulted on their winning purse bid for the right to promote the September 29th title fight. Since King came in second place in the bid (Maskaev promoter Dennis Rappaport came in third) DKP will now likely promote the event. How this affects the date, television (Showtime was originally going to televise) and venue remains to be seen. "(King's) been given the opportunity but we haven't been contacted by him yet," Maskaev manager Fred Kesch informed Fightnews on Friday afternoon.

Former two-time heavyweight champion Vitali Klitschko will begin his comeback against three-time title challenger Jameel McCline on September 22 in Munich, Germany. For Klitschko (35-2, 34 KOs), it will be his first fight since his December 2004 KO against Danny Williams. Vitali retired in 2005 after a series of injuries. McCline (38-7-3, 23 KOs) is coming off an unsuccessful January WBA title challenge against then-champ Nikolai Valuev that ended in round three when McCline collapsed with a knee injury. Vitali's brother, current IBF champion Wladimir Klitschko, stopped McCline via tenth round TKO in 2002. The WBC has mandated that Vitali, recognized as "champion emeritus," be given an immediate title shot against the winner of the mandatory Oleg Maskaev-Samuel Peter fight.

The ongoing controversy regarding WBC Heavyweight champion Oleg Maskaev and mandatory challenger Samuel Peter may finally be settled in the ring when the two power-punchers get it on at a venue to be determined this fall, Fightnews has learned. The fight is tentatively scheduled to take place on Saturday, September 29. "I'm waiting for some confirmations but nothing is etched in stone," an irritated Dennis Rappaport (Maskaev's promoter) explained to Fightnews. Rappaport is currently in the process of suing the WBC for approving a purse split of 55-45 for the Maskaev-Peter bout.

Samuel Peter co-promoter Duva Boxing has won the right to stage the WBC mandatory title defense of Oleg Maskaev against Samuel Peter. Promoters Dino Duva, Don King and Dennis Rappaport were all on hand at noon Monday at WBC headquarters in Mexico City for the long anticipated WBC purse offer proceeding.

A deal has been worked out between the camps of WBC heavyweight champion Oleg Maskaev, mandatory challenger Samuel Peter and comebacking WBC champion emeritus Vitali Klitschko. Maskaev will face Peter no later than August, with the winner to face Klitschko by the end of the year according to KFSN-TV. Maskaev and Peter will now go into a free negotiation period and if no agreement is reached, the WBC will call a purse bid.

Move over Las Vegas. Moscow, Russia may become the place for big-time boxing with no less than two heavyweight title bouts scheduled for the same day in June. The 12,000 seat Luzhniki Sports Palace will be the host for the delayed WBO title fight between title-holder Shannon Briggs and mandatory challenger Sultan Ibragimov. Meanwhile it also looks like WBC champ Oleg Maskaev will also box in the region, making his second title defense against returning former champion Vitali Klitschko.

WBC heavyweight champion Oleg Maskaev's promoter Dennis Rappaport told the Sacramento Bee's Jim Jenkins that a step-aside agreement with Sam Peter's people is "in place.

The clock is ticking down for WBC #1 ranked heavyweight contender Samuel Peter and his camp. Peter was recently offered $2.5 million in "step-aside" money with an "iron-clad" deal to fight the winner of a May 19th HBO date between current champion Oleg Maskaev and former champ Vitali Klitschko.

Dino Duva, promoter of WBC #1 heavyweight contender Samuel Peter, wishes to issue the following response to recent public comments made by representatives of WBC Champion Oleg Maskaev and former champion Vitali Klitschko.

Currently in informal talks over who will face Maskaev in his next defense, Duva says he’s troubled by the insinuations being made by the other two fighters’ teams.

The on-going debate to determine the next challenger for WBC Heavyweight Champion Oleg Maskaev continues Tuesday as intermediaries representing Maskaev, former champion Vitali Klitschko and current number-one ranked Samuel Peter meet again in informal negotiations. "Discussions are going on today," Maskaev promoter Dennis Rappaport explained to FightNews. "The different sides are talking." According to Rappaport, Peter has been offered $2.5 million dollars as "step-aside" money so that Maskaev can defend his belt against "WBC Champion Emeritus" Klitschko in a May bout to take place in Moscow.

Both Samuel Peter and Vitali Klitschko have claimed the right to be the next challenger for the WBC heavyweight champion Oleg Maskaev. The champion has requested to fight Vitali Klitschko first. WBC President Jose Sulaiman has communicated with representatives of each boxer in an attempt to resolve this issue in an amicable way, and regrets that his efforts have been unsuccessful. Under WBC Rule 5.3, the next step is "compulsory mediation," a process in which a neutral mediator assists in conducting good faith negotiations to settle their dispute. The WBC has now ordered the boxers to participate in the compulsory mediation process. If the parties cannot agree on a mediator, one will be selected from those of the Court of Arbitration for Sport. If the mediation is unsuccessful, the WBC will accept the arbitrator’s decision as binding and final. A WBC statement reads in part: "While controversy is never pleasant, we understand that it is part of boxing, and can almost always be expected when the prize is what many believe to be the greatest title in all of sports, the WBC heavyweight champion of the world."

Dino Duva, promoter of #1 heavyweight contender Samuel Peter, has issued the following open letter to comebacking former champion Vitali Klitschko, who has now publicly announced his intention to step over mandatory challenger Peter and face WBC belt holder Oleg Maskaev:

Former WBC heavyweight champion Vitali Vitali Klitschko released the following statement in regards to his comeback.

It was less than three years ago, when the potential European fight of the year between undisputed junior welterweight king Kostya Tszyu and mandatory challenger Sharmba Mitchell, scheduled to take place in Olympiysky Sports Arena, Moscow, on February, 2004, was scratched for good due to injuries, suffered by Kostya during his preparation. The unlucky occasion ruined all the plans, leaving organizers with the black holes in their budget and boxing fans with the horrible feeling of being cheated. The fight wasn’t, however, canceled but was relocated to USA and took place in early November the same year.

It was when no one in Russia could really believe that the title bout would somehow be arranged in the largest country on planet in the nearest future. Financial losses, lack of interest among sponsors and sportive media as well as the absence of world-beaters in higher weight classes were the clear factors, preventing any important fight from being held in Eastern Europe.

Situation turned around considerably in the last two years. Starting from Valuev’s successful performance against WBA beltholder John Ruiz and going on with Vladimir Klitschko and Sergey Liakhovich dominant victories over Chris Byrd (IBF) and Lamon Brewster (WBO), it reached its highest point on August, 12, when 37-year old Oleg Maskaev completed the clean sweep by post-Soviet fighters, having knocked out WBC boss Hasim Rahman in 12th round of their brutal clash.

‘The Big O’ became the first champion among the Eastern European heavyweight bunch, who decided to defend his belt in Motherland. The negotiations were pretty complicated, but at last WBC #10 Japan-based Ugandan Peter Okhello was named as the voluntary challenger in early October, and the second only title fight in Russian boxing history landed on December, 10, at the same Olympiysky Sports Arena. The only previous title collision, held in Russia thirteen years ago, was the IBF cruiserweight championship between Al Cole and Glenn McRory.

Oleg Maskaev 240 vs. Peter Okhello 255.5

(WBC Heavyweight title)

Alexander Povetkin 221.5 vs. Imamu Mayfield 208

It’s official. WBC heavyweight champion Oleg Maskaev is the Russian citizen since now. The President of Russian Federation, Mr. Vladimir Vladimirovich Putin has signed the edict today, which allowed ‘The Big O’ to receive his long-awaited Russian citizenship. The next day will surely be something special for 37-year old Oleg, as he is to become the first ever Russian champion to defend his title in his Motherhood. Maskaev will enter the ring under the Russian flag and hymn to retain his heavyweight championship versus tough Japan-based Ugandan Peter Okhello on Sunday night at Olympiysky Sports Arena, Moscow, Russia.

There were no riots to worry about and there were no bad blood as well, when current WBC heavyweight titleholder Oleg Maskaev met his future opponent Peter Okhello (ranked 10th in the world by WBC) for the first time during Tuesday press conference. The final presser for the huge upcoming show, featuring Maskaev – Okhello heavyweight championship as a headliner, was held at “Arbat” fight club, Moscow, Russia. A good share of boxing celebrities attended, including living legend Kostya Tszyu, promoters Edward Gumashyan and Evgeny Pustovalov and the best of Russian sports media.

Maskaev, his coach Victor Valle Jr., his manager Fred Kesch, his promoter Dennis Rappaport, promoter Vladimir Hrunov, producers Yuri Fedorov and Maxim Volkov, and former amateur legend Victor Petrovich Ageev (the president of Russian Professional Boxing Federation) were all on hand to answer any possible questions. Representing challenger’s camp were Okhello, his coach Cornelius Boza-Edwards (former WBC junior lightweight titleholder) and his manager Toshiro Matsuo. Both fighters seemed pretty relaxed, though this perception could have probably been false as Okhello (18-4, 16 KOs) was spending his second only day in Moscow. However, there were no signs of war and the atmosphere in “Arbat” was friendly enough for both teams to smile more than to shout angrily or to provoke the opposite side.

Oleg Maskaev (33-5, 26 KOs) is already in Moscow, trying to reach his best physical and mental shape prior the upcoming WBC voluntary defense against Japan-based Ugandan Peter Okhello (18-4, 16 KOs), which will take its place the next Sunday, Dec. 10, in Olympiyski Sports Arena, Moscow.

The second only Russian heavyweight world champion (With Nikolay Valuev being the first one) has arrived in Moscow this Tuesday with his head coach Victor Valle, Jr., manager Fred Kesch, promoter Dennis Rappaport and chief sparring partner Zuri Lawrence. The champion was greeted soundly by Russian fans and immediately attacked by local media.

A few changes have been made to the undercard of the huge upcoming (Dec. 10) show with the WBC heavyweight title clash between Russian Oleg Maskaev and Ugandan Peter Okhello as a headliner. Talented Dzhimi Kapanov is off the show due to the undisclosed injury, suffered during the preparation. Replacing him will be Russian cruiser Pavel Melkomian (20-2, 8 KOs), whose opponent is still to be named. Melkomian, once an undefeated contender, is coming off the most horrible year in a career with the recent kayo losses to Grigory Drozd and Rudolf Kraj.

American Jay Nady will be the third man in the ring during the upcoming (Moscow, Dec. 10) WBC heavyweight showdown, featuring Russian Oleg Maskaev (33-5, 26 KOs) and Ugandan Peter Okhello (18-4, 16 KOs). Nady is widely known among Russian boxing fans for his loyalty to the rules of the Sweet Science and his mastership in refereeing world title fights, some of them featuring post-Soviet fighters. He was also the third man in the ring during the entitlement of the current champion, when Oleg sensationally kayoed Hasim Rahman in the very last round to capture his WBC belt.

Judging the fight will be Evgueni Gorstkov (Russia), Ken Morita (Japan) and Bob Logist (Belgium). WBC president Jose Suleyman will be present in Moscow, supervising the title clash. The promoter of the show Vladimir Hrunov confirmed that legendary Michael Buffer will be announcing the collision inside the squared ring.

A huge presser was held yesterday at ITAR-TASS Press Centre, Moscow, Russia, to make the other coverage of the upcoming (Dec. 10 at Olympiysky Sports Arena, Moscow, Russia) show, featuring several best Russian prizefighters with Oleg Maskaev – Peter Okhello WBC heavyweight title clash as the main event of the evening. It has been officially announced that Alexander Povetkin vs. Ross Puritty collision is a go for now, while Roman Karmazin’s and ‘Iron’ Mike Tyson’s bouts are also possible to be arranged in Moscow on the undercard of the show.

Headlining the press conference was Olympic (Athens, 2004) super heavyweight gold medalist Alexander Povetkin (9-0, 7 KOs as a pro). Also answering the questions were: WBA heavyweight champion Nikolay Valuev (45-0, 33 KOs), promoter of the show Vladimir Hrunov, producer of the show Yuri Fedorov, Valuev’s manager Boris Dimitrov, former amateur legend Victor Petrovich Ageev (the president of the Russian Professional Boxing Federation) and former amateur star Yuri Alexandrov (the vice-president of the RPBF). Povetkin’s promoter Wilfried Sauerland had been scheduled to appear in attendance but had to miss it due to some visa problems. Prior the very beginning of the presser an inspiring event was held as Nikolay Valuev was awarded by Victor Petrovich Ageev with the special crystal glove from RPBF “for an outstanding contribution in development of the Russian professional boxing”. The glove was huge enough for Russian champion to put his giant fist inside it.

It seems that Ross Puritty (30-19-3, 27 KOs) will be the next in line to face hot Russian prospect Alexander Povetkin (9-0, 7 KOs) on the undercard of the Maskaev – Okhello WBC heavyweight title clash, which is scheduled to take place on the 10th of December in Olympiysky Sports Arena, Moscow, Russia.

It’s not always about boxing itself but it’s sometimes very noble and inspiring. And it will be remembered for a long, long time. The latest example is on hand in Russia as the WBC heavyweight titleholder Oleg Maskaev showed once again during his recent trip to the Motherland that he is not only a successful prizefighter but a sincere man as well.

It was officially announced this Tuesday in Moscow, Russia, that current WBC heavyweight world champion Oleg Maskaev (33-5, 26 KOs) will make his first title defense against Japan-based Ugandan Peter Okhello (18-4, 16 KOs), who is ranked 10th by the WBC, on December 10 in Olympiysky Sports Arena, Moscow, Russia. This show will be arranged by Yuri Fedorov Sports Lab in association with promoter Vladimir Hrunov. Maskaev – Okhello fight will be the second ever title bout in Russian history (following Al Cole – Glenn McRory IBF cruiserweight showdown in July, 1993) and the first one to include Russian fighter as a participant in his homeland. However, no undercard of the show has been officially announced yet.

Though no official words have been said yet, some informed sources close to Russian promoter Vladimir Hryunov confirmed that current WBC heavyweight champion Oleg Maskaev would make an optional defense versus Japan-based Ugandan Peter Okhello (WBC #12 and current OPBF beltholder) on December, 23rd in Moscow in still undisclosed venue.
