Just when it appeared as if everything was set for WBC Heavyweight champion Oleg Maskaev to defend his title against number one ranked Samuel Peter yet another wrench was thrown into the already lengthy and complex negotiations for the fight. Duva Boxing, Peter's promoter along with Don King, defaulted on their winning purse bid for the right to promote the September 29th title fight. Since King came in second place in the bid (Maskaev promoter Dennis Rappaport came in third) DKP will now likely promote the event. How this affects the date, television (Showtime was originally going to televise) and venue remains to be seen. "(King's) been given the opportunity but we haven't been contacted by him yet," Maskaev manager Fred Kesch informed Fightnews on Friday afternoon. "Duva was talking about September 29th but it depends on who the promoter is." So is the date likely to stay the same? "I assume it probably would be," Kesch said. "Presumably we'd be hearing from King within the next week." Regarding a venue to hold the fight Kesch said one is still being decided on. "I've heard anywhere from Russia to Madison Square Garden and anywhere in between. The promoter decides on that and since we're not the promoter we don't know." Maskaev, 34-5, 28 KO's, meanwhile is already training in Sacramento with long-time trainer Victor Valle.
