Though no official words have been said yet, some informed sources close to Russian promoter Vladimir Hryunov confirmed that current WBC heavyweight champion Oleg Maskaev would make an optional defense versus Japan-based Ugandan Peter Okhello (WBC #12 and current OPBF beltholder) on December, 23rd in Moscow in still undisclosed venue.
According to “Ves’ Sport” media agency Maskaev was quoted as saying the following: “I’ll take this challenge for the sake of Russian and Russian people. That’s not all about talking. I eagerly want Moscow to host the first ever world title bout in Russian boxing history. I don’t want to say any trash about Peter Okhello; however I do think that more prestigious and well-off contenders wouldn’t have traveled so far to fight in Russia. I haven’t seen anything of Okhello yet but I shall sit down to review his tapes, possibly, by the end of the week. Till this moment the deal will have been signed”.
The show will be promoted by Vladimir Hryunov who has already worked with Oleg three years ago for Julius Francis fight in Chekhov, Russia. Hor Russian prospect Alexander Povetkin will fight for his first title in career. It seems that WBC mandatory Sam Peter will also appear on the undercard with the TBA as an opponent.
