According to the official site of Russian Professional Boxing Federation, Vladimir Hryunov, who seems to be one of the most well-known Russian promoters nowadays, confirmed that current WBC heavyweight titleholder Oleg Maskaev would fight in Moscow in mid-December (perhaps between the 10th and the 16th of December) with the opponent to be announced soon in the undisclosed venue.
Maskaev (33-5, 26 KOs) will be headliner of the show, with the best Russian pro boxers fighting in supportive bouts of the evening. One of them will be 2004 Olympics superheavyweight gold medalist up and coming Alexander Povetkin (8-0, 6 KOs), managed and promoted by Hryunov in association with Wilfried Sauerland.
“All contracts and conditions have been already finalized, so that we shall report all the details pretty soon. We have never staged something compared to that here in Russia. That’s the powerful stimulus for me as well as for fighters and world boxing community. All the participants have to work hard on that but I hope the show to be the turning point and the beginning of a new era in boxing history. Heavyweight is the most prestigious category in world boxing now as it always was. And now all the titles belong to the guys from former Soviet Union. World-known promoters rate Russia as the country with an ultimate potential still to be fully realized”.
If organized the show will be the most important event in modern history of Russian boxing and only the second world title fight since 1993 IBF cruiserweight showdown between Al Cole and Glenn McCrory. Though no opponent has been already finalized for Maskaev right now, Japan-based Ugandan Peter Okhello (18-4, 16 KOs), who is ranked 12 by the WBC, is said to be the most possible candidature. Also, according to some undisclosed sources in World Boxing Council, Maskaev will be granted with an optional defense if he is able to meet it till the end of the year.
