World-class boxing hit the Russian capital for the second time in eight months with the “Boxing Show #2”, promoted by Yuri Fedorov Sports Lab in association with the Sauerland Event and the Seminole Warriors Boxing and with the help of Putinka Boxing Stars. However, the breath-taking thriller on paper turned out to be a less-than-stellar performance after a bunch of sudden failures and withdraws, though remaining the most significant boxing event in Eastern Europe this year.

In the walk-out bout of Saturday's big show in Moscow, former WBO heavyweight champion Henry Akinwande (50-3-1, 30 KOs) of Nigeria outpointed Ukrainian late-sub Andriy Oleynik (12-8, 10 KOs) over ten rounds. The should-be thrilling fight on paper turned out to be an ugly clowning affair thanks to Oleynik who did less in the ring than outside it during the fight. Akinwande was originally slated to face Oleg Platov in a rematch.

Russian heavyweight hope Alexander Povetkin struggled a bit but successfully passed the toughest test of his career by scoring a shutout decision over American Larry Donald: 100-90 on all the judges' scorecards. After an even first round, Alexander increased the number of thrown combinations and started beating Donald to the punch. Larry fought hard in the middle of the bout but visibly faded down the stretch. Povetkin is now 13-0 with 11 KOs, while Donald dropped down to 42-5-3, 24 KOs. Fightnews scored the fight 100-91 for Povetkin.

The sheduled fight between IBF mandatory challenger Dmitriy Kirillov and TBA for the vacant IBF 115-pound world super flyweight belt was finally cancelled after numerous attempts to save the match. Timur Shailezov was the last to withdraw from the fight joining Arzykulov, Mazimbaev, Vargas and Matumla.

Alexander Povetkin 225.5 vs Larry Donald 245.5
Dmitry Kirillov 115 vs Kakhramon Arzykulov ???
(Vacant IBF super flyweight title)*
Henry Akinwande 245 vs Andrey Oleynik 234**
Vitaly Tsypko 167.5 vs Maxim Goloviznin 164
Vladimir Povetkin 182 vs Hose El Howly 186.25
Lukasz Janick 194.75 vs Makhmud Atadzanov 180
Karo Murat 172 vs Sergey Botnikov 166½
Dzhimi Kapanov 185 vs Alexander Romashko 179½

What had once seemed to be just another presser, covering the ‘Boxing Show #2’, turned out to be an intriguing performance with the promoters playing their roles brilliantly and with a thrilling change in the mid of the story.

The press-conference, held at ITAR-TASS building on Tverskoy Boulevard in Moscow, Russia, on Wednesday, was first dedicated to the Kirillov-Vargas super flyweight showdown. The situation, however, changed a lot during the process as it was announced that the IBF title fight against Vargas would be no go. Alexander Povetkin’s co-manager Vladimir Hrunov, who attended the presser, took control of the scene by announcing the arrival of Carl King and Henry Akinwande and by getting the tribune in order to continue the pre-match show in the most exciting way.

When it seemed to be finally on, a long-waited showdown between the local hero Dmitry Kirillov and Mexican Ricardo Vargas was suddenly cancelled after all. The stunning info was announced a few hours ago by Leon Margules of Seminole Warriors Boxing and Russian matchmaker Stepan Lendiel. Vargas suffered a hand injury on Monday evening and had to withdraw from the fight. All the official documents, regarding the injury, were sent straight to the IBF. Kirillov’s camp is currently looking for a late replacement. No exact names were revealed; however, rumors are held that Russian-based Estonian Andrey Kostin can be an opponent for the Russian super flyweight this Saturday night. The final announcement about Kirillov’s next foe and the possibility and the status of the fight will be made in a few hours.

Russian Dmitry Kirillov is one of those, who never give up. Each time he tried to step up in class, he discovered somebody or something, not willing much to help him but rather to spoil all his efforts recklessly. A sorrowful experience was learnt for the first time in March, 2002, when Kirillov, then undefeated 20-0 youngster, suffered a bitter loss in Denmark, dropping a close decision to local hero Spend Abazi in a gutsy effort to capture European bantamweight crown.

Two years later the ‘Baby’ came down to the 115 lbs. to fight Japanese-based Korean Masamori Tokuyama for his WBC super flyweight title. Terribly unstable in the first half of the match Kirillov increased his work rate ultimately down the stretch and was one or two shots away from knocking the champion down in last rounds. However, a close unanimous decision once again separated him from the title. The tendency wasn’t broken the last May, when Kirillov showed the best boxing of his life only to be awarded with the extremely debatable split decision loss versus Nicaraguan puncher Luis Alberto Perez. “Many would call that a highway robbery”, was a verdict from the Showtime’s boxing expert Al Bernstein that night. Kirillov was one second from being crying and tearing while the crowd booed the judges’ scorecards wildly.

A huge undercard, featuring two world-class fights and a bunch of talented youngsters, was announced yesterday by the organizers of “The Boxing Show 2”. Headlining preliminary part of the show is a rematch between up and coming Ukrainian heavyweight Oleg Platov (25-1, 21 KO) and tough Nigerian veteran Henry Akinwande (49-3-1, 30 KO) for Oleg’s IBF intercontinental title. Platov, 24, is ranked #14 by the IBF and #15 by the WBC. Akinwande, 41, is a former WBO champion, known for his wins over Orlin Norris, Axel Schultz, Timo Hoffmann and other formidable opponents. Platov defeated Akinwande via debatable split decision last November to acquire his minor belt.

It’s official. On June, 30, Russian heavyweight hope Alexander Povetkin (11-0, 9 KOs) will try to overcome the stiffest test in his short but almost flawless career by facing two-time world title challenger Monte ‘Two Gunz’ Barrett (31-5, 18 KOs) in a decent attempt to step up hugely in class.

The Povetkin-Barrett showdown will crown a huge Moscow boxing card, promoted by Yuri Fedorov Sports Lab in association with Sauerland Event and Seminole Warriors Boxing, and with the help of Putinka Boxing Stars. The show will likely feature an IBF super flyweight clash for the vacant belt between local hero Dmitry ‘The Baby’ Kirillov (28-3, 9 KOs) and Mexican veteran Ricardo ‘Chapo’ Vargas (39-12-3, 13 KOs), a heavyweight rematch of the debated first fight between Ukrainian Oleg Platov (25-1, 21 KOs) and Nigerian Henry Akinwande (49-3-1, 30 KOs), and also a huge number of local and foreign prospects is expected to fill the card. The event, scheduled to take place at Olimpiyski Sports Arena, was officially announced yesterday at RIA Novosti press center in Moscow.

After more than a year of inactivity Russian top super flyweight contender Dmitry 'The Baby' Kirillov will be finally back to the squared ring and straight into his third title shot on June 30 in Moscow. Kirillov (28-3, 9 KOs) who is ranked 5th by the IBF and 15th by the WBO in 115 lbs, will face WBA #8 rated bantamweight Ricardo ‘Chapo’ Vargas (39-12-3) for the vacant IBF belt. Dmitry has already fought for the same title in his last outing, dropping a highly debated split decision to Nicaraguan Luis Alberto Perez more than a year ago. Perez was next scheduled to face Vargas on November, 4, but failed to make weight, having lost his belt at scales.

The IBF purse bid for the vacant jr. bantamweight championship between Ricardo Vargas and Dimitri Kirilov was held today. Warriors Boxing submitted the winning bid of $53,330, edging Don King Productions, which submitted a bid of $50,000.

Another pugilist from Russia who is preparing himself for the future challenges on the long and hard way to the title is Ivan Kirpa. Right now he’s training in Wild Card gym, California, under the common regulation by Freddie Roach and is close to sign a deal with American promoter he prefers not to talk about at the moment. Once Ivan Kirpa was known well around Europe as one of the most talented welterweights in business but unfortunately things changed considerably just in months and soon he found himself near the possible end of his promising boxing career.

Vadim Tokarev (22-0-1, 15 KOs) of Kazan’, Russia, seems to be closer than ever to so desirable fight for one of major titles in cruiserweight division. Current NABF titleholder is said to be taking part in IBF eliminator on November, the 18th, in Warszawa, Poland, on the undercard of scheduled fight for a vacant IBF cruiserweight belt between #1 contender Steve Cunningham of USA and Poland native Krzystof  Wlodarczik, ranked #4 by IBF. Tokarev’s opponent is still to be named, though David Haye and Jean-Marc Mormeck are among possibilities, despite an official announcement yet to be released.

Russian 115 lbs contender Dmitry Kirillov (28-3, 9 KOs) is still seeking an opponent for his future IBF eliminator, scheduled to take place this autumn. Dmitry was controversially defeated by current Nicaraguan titleholder Luis Perez this May and demanded immediate return bout without any success.

Recovering from his most controversial loss in whole career at the hands of the reigning champ Luis Alberto Perez, Russian 115 lbs. contender Dmitry Kirillov suffered another setback as his scheduled IBF eliminator versus South African Masibulele Makepula seems failed to be realized. Despite the purse bid, won by Warrior’s Boxing Promotions in the last month, ‘Hawk’, who is ranked third by both WBC and IBF, is said to take on Mexican superstar Jorge Arce on September, 23rd, in quest for the WBC international title. The bout will possibly be also for the place of mandatory challenger to fight WBC king Masamori Tokuyama as Arce is the highest-ranked in WBC ratings of junior bantamweight division. Fightnews.com made a short stop to know how Dmitry is feeling about current situation and his plans for the nearest future.

Yet another chance for making a shot at title was given to Russian 115 lbs contender Dmitry Kirillov two days ago as his IBF eliminator versus former WBO light flyweight champion Masibulele ‘Hawk’ Makepula (28-3, 18KOs) from East London, SA, has been set this autumn through the purse bid, won by Warriors Boxing Promotions. Kirillov (28-3, 9 KOs) was right there on touch with Fighnews.com to comment the news and to tell a few words about a sorrowful setback, suffered by his closest friend Roman Karmazin last Saturday in St. Louis. Here is what Dmitry has to say.

The fight, once scheduled for April 1st, has finally taken place on the 6th of May in Worcester, MA, USA. But what had been once thought as a God-blessed chance turned out to be the saddest moment of entire Kirillov’s career. Being outboxed and outscored by guest challenger for almost all of twelve rounds Luis Perez was able to leave the squared circle with a highly controversial split decision --- 115-113 and 114-113 by Michael Ancona and David Hess respectively for Nicaraguan with 110-117 by Paul Berry in favor of Russian contender --- and his IBF belt with him. Showtime press row as good as a vast majority of independent observers saw this as an easy win for 162cm fighter of St. Petersburg, Russia.

Back to his hometown Dmitry Kirillov took a moment to share his thoughts and feelings about Perez fight and possible showdowns with other near-bantam champions with yours truly.
