By Alexey Sukachev, July, 9, 2006

A huge card, featuring a bunch of top-rated Russian fighters, is under preparation right now for the 28th September in Moscow. The main event of the evening, promoted by Nikolay Grammatikov, is already set, as current EBU super middleweight champion Mger Mkrtchian of St. Peterburg, Russia, by the way of Gumni, Armenia, will defend his title versus always-tough David Gogiya, Togliatti, Russia, originally from Senaki, Georgia.

Mkrtchian is coming after the sensational eleventh round KO of once unbeaten French Jackson Chanet. In the fight, where Mger had come as a deep underdog, and far behind on points, Armenian was able to disappoint the public with a stoppage. That was his second win over the first-class opposition and first since the three-round destruction of Bahamian Freeman Barr back to 2003. Mkrtchian is now 23-2, 17 KOs with the only losses, suffered from undefeated 168-lbs emperor Joe Calzaghe (in 2004) and fringe Russian contender Denis Inkin (in 2001).

David Gogiya (15-1, 4 KOs) is on the heat streak. Once considering as a stepping stone for young prospects, he turned to be a contender after his recent performances. In April, 2005, Gogiya soundly exhausted Russian super middleweight champion Sergey Tatevosyan, but the bout was highly controversially judged as a majority decision for Tatevosyan. In September, 2005, Gogiya was robbed one more time as his victory over former WBU titlist Eric Teymour was held to a no-contest without any explanations. At last, this March David Gogiya made a minor upset, by decking Croatian Stjepan Bozic twice in six bloody rounds on his way to a tough-earned split decision.

Unbeaten Hispanic Gabriel Campillo (11-0, 3 KOs) was considered first as an opponent for Mkrtchian, but then was subsequently changed to Gogiya due to interests of Russian TV. The venue is still to be named but ‘Forum-Hall’ is a strong possibility.

Russian welterweight prospect and former amateur star Anton Solopov (12-1, 9 KOs) will try to avenge his only loss in record on the 15th of September. Solopov is set to face tough Philippinean Dondon Sultan (13-6-2, 7 KOs) for the PABA belt.

Sultan made a major upset last May, when he was able to stop promising Solopov just in two minutes on his way to the 1st round KO. Solopov wasn’t prepared for the bout mentally, as his wife gave the birth for the baby just four days prior the fight.

The upcoming battle is the key moment for Anton, who is promoted by future Hall-of-Famer Kostya Tszyu. The victory will elevate him to the top ten’s of all the sanctioning bodies, while the loss will possibly mean the end of long, but not yet-walked way for Solopov.

The show will be staged at the Sports Palace of Khanty-Mansiysk, Russia.
