WBO Latino cruiserweight champion Ali Ismailov, 33, was back inside the ring last Thursday in St. Petersburg, Russia. Former amateur star Ismailov (7-1-1, 6 KOs), originally from Baku, Azerbaijan, showed his trademark aggressiveness and raw strength by stopping totally overmatched Ibragim Khalilov (2-0, 1 KO) in the third round of their non-title affair. That was the fifth straight KO victory for Ismailov, who suffered his only loss last year from the hands of world-rated Russian cruiser Vadim Tokarev. Alexander Yagupov’s ‘Colossem Box Promotions’ promoted the show.
Former middleweight fringe contender Aslanbek Kodzoev, 26, will resume his professional career on May, 19, in Moscow, Russia. The opponent for tough-as-nails Kodzoev (17-2-1, 12 KOs) is still to be determined. Kodzoev last fought in January, 2006, loosing TKO 8 to Marco Antonio Rubio due to late injury-motivated stoppage. Aslanbek has a bunch of beaten notables to his resume, including the wins over Sergey Tatevosyan, Jerry Elliot, Rasheem Brown and Marcos Primera.
Kodzoev fight is scheduled for eight rounds. The main event of the show, promoted by ‘Imperia’ promotional company, will see Uzbek Bekzod Nabiev (8-1-1, 5 KOs) against unbeaten Russian Arman Sargsyan (10-0, 5 KOs) for the vacant WBC ABCO interim lightweight title. In co-featured bout of the evening Alisher Rakhimov (13-0, 6 KOs) will face Yuri Romanovich (14-4, 11 KOs) for the vacant interim Russian super featherweight title.
WBO #8 light middleweight Kuvanych Toygonbayev (27-4, 18 KOs) will defend his WBO Asian Pacific belt for the second time on May, 31, in DIVS center, Ekaterinburg, Russia. The opponent for the hard-hitting Uzbek is fairly unknown Tanzanian Hassan Matumla (12-5, 8 KOs).
