Going upward isn’t an easy thing, especially when you have to take chances in pretty risky action for that. But as always no risk means no reward. That’s exactly the case of the top heavyweight prospect Alexander Povetkin (10-0, 8 KOs) of Chekhov, Russia, who will make another gigantic leap in his career on March, 3, in Germany. Stadthalle, Rostock is a possible venue. Povetkin, ranked 26th by the WBC in its latest ratings, is going to face an opponent to be named in the fight, which can probably lift him up to the top-15 of the world rankings. Meanwhile, it means that the foe will definitely be world-known and highly ranked heavyweight, maybe even the former world champion. It’s exactly the point, which was put forward by Vladimir Hrunov, manager of Povetkin, who was named the best of that kind the last year in Russia. “We are going to make another step in building the future champion. I’m not able to name an opponent for Alexander, but it will be the well-known fighter, who can box and who will be risky enough to test Povetkin’s skills. But we are moving up and that’s highly necessary”.
Though no foe is still announced, strong rumors are held that it’ll be no less than American Brian Minto, who is coming off the sensational KO victory over famous Axel Schulz. However, Mr. Hrunov hasn’t accepted the estimated idea: “Nothing is solved to date. We have a good share of candidates with sound names, however, negotiations are under way and no name can be revealed as of now”. Povetkin, the Athens 2004 Olympic super heavyweight gold medalist, made a huge breakthrough the last year with five consecutive wins (four of them coming inside the distance) over credible opposition, including tough Nigerian Friday Ahunanya, ex-challenger Ed Mahone and former cruiser champ Imamu Mayfield. Povetkin is planning to get his world title shot to the end of the year or in the first half of 2008.
