Alexander Povetkin (8-0, 6 KOs) seems to be ready for his upcoming fight versus tough American knockout artist Ed Mahone (23-7-2, 23 KOs), scheduled on September, 23rd, in Wetzlar, Germany, on the undercard of Abraham-Miranda showdown.
The only Russian ever to win Olympic super heavyweight gold medal (Athens, 2004) showed his enormous talent one more time during yesterday’s open workout in his hometown of Chekhov, 60 miles south from Moscow. Everyone who is interested in Alexander’s future had an opportunity to watch his training session as well as to speak with his coach Valery Belov and well-known Russian sport manager Vladimir Hrunov.
The chief moment of the workout was Povetkin’s control spar with former IBF cruiserweight world champion Al ‘Ice’ Cole. Hot prospect showed his trademark confidence by controlling the tempo and the path of this training fight. Povetkin was easy on his feet cutting angles and working hard on his opponent in the ropes. However, Alexander demonstrated his respect to the 42-year-old veteran avoiding merciless punishment opposite to possible situations in official bouts. Despite working eight rounds with Cole he used his thunderous right hand only three-four times in whole session. Povetkin preferred to work with jabs making two-three combos of them. He also tried his left hook both in attack and back-to-defense modes. Being aware of possible encounters on short and mid distance and clinches in Mahon’s fight Povetkin trained these skills in toe-to-toe combat with Cole. However, Al Cole showed he is still no way a bum by bringing all he had to the young opponent. Being 15 years older his foe and showing understandable rustiness he was able to make it through eight rounds and exploded hot in the last one.
After the training session Alexander revealed he hadn’t showed his best in order to avoid possible injuries prior the next challenge. Povetkin also confirmed being in tip-top shape both physically and mentally without any disturbing moments, including injuries. On Sunday, 17th, Russian heavyweight is going to leave for Germany, where the final part of his preparation (including his spars with WBA titlist Nikolay Valuev) will be arranged.
