K2 Promotions announced today that a clash for the European super welterweight championship between undefeated Russian star Zauerbek Baysangurov (15-0, 12 KOs) and French standout Hussein Bayram (24-2, 13 KOs) will be the co-feature for the IBF/IBO heavyweight championship collision between Wladimir Klitschko and Lamon Brewster on July 7th in Cologne, Germany. A purse bid held Tuesday at the EBU offices in Rome was won by National Box Promotion on behalf of Sauerland Event and themselves. National and Sauerland have co-promoted Baysangurov since 2004. "We are happy that K2 agreed to our proposal to stage this bout on the under card of Klitschko/Brewster in Cologne on July 7th," said Sauerland's General Manager Chris Meyer. "Paperwork will be finalized very shortly."
Reports that K2 won the purse bid are incorrect, as K2 holds only a promtional licence from the renegade GBA/GBO Federation, which is not recognized by and/or affiliated with the EBU or any major world body. One of the conditions sure to be set is that the "local federation in charge" who will supervise the fight will not be the GBA/GBO, but instead originate from either the Ukraine or Austria. As a result, the official promoters of this EBU fight will be Sauerland Event represented by Chris Meyer and National Box Promotion headed by Vadim Buchkalov.
