The show, mentioned as the greatest one in a short history of Azerbaijani pro boxing, turned out to be its most painful disgrace, as a huge card, promoted by Alexander Yagupov’s “Coliseum Promotions” in an association with Spanish-based “Tundra Barcelo” promotional company, fell through on January, 19, in Baku.
‘We had been preparing for a significant event; however, the same couldn’t be said about the local sports arena, which had been shockingly closed for future reconstruction just days before out show erected’, says Yagupov.
The main event, featuring hard-hitting Azerbaijani Ali Ismailov (6-1-1, 5 KOs), 32, against seasoned Brazilian veteran Luciano Torres (52-9, 35 KOs), nine years his older, for the WBO Latino cruiserweight belt, was subsequently relocated to Saint Petersburg, Russia, and will be held on February, 10, in ‘Conty’ casino. Ali is known mostly for giving Russian cruiserweight star Vadim Tokarev one of his toughest fights in career last February before being stopped by injury after the ninth round. With the win Ismailov, a former amateur star and two-time Olympian, will be one step closer to realize his dream of avenging the only loss in his resume.
Supporting the main event is a bunch of young talented fighters, including middleweight prospect Gennady Martirosyan in the first eight-rounder of his career.
