Two-time world title challenger Alexander Gurov of Ukraine is once again in line for another attempt to get another title shot at the very end of his career. Ukrainian cruiser came back strong yesterday at DIVS center, Ekaterinburg, Russia, via twelve-round unanimous decision over game American Shaun George (13-2-2, 6 KOs), 27, of Brooklyn, New York. Towering (197 cm) Gurov (39-5-1, 33 KOs), 35, showed a bit of rustiness but was able to deck George late in the 12th round to take him almost out of the ring and to earn hard-fought decision over American foe. With the win Gurov captured the vacant WBO Asia Pacific title. That was his first outing since the crushing defeat from the hands of British KO master David Haye back in December 2005.
In co-featured bout of the evening WBO #13 Kuvanych Toygonbayev (27-4-1, 18 KOs) easily retained his WBO Asia Pacific junior middleweight title via TKO 8 over Russian Akhmed Oligov (20-5-1, 4 KOs) of Kazan. Kazan fighter was floored in the eight round of massacre. The main support fight of the event saw talented welterweight Anton Solopov (14-1-1, 10 KOs) back on track with the fifth round TKO over previously unbeaten Ugandan Hassan Saku (8-1, 7 KOs). Solopov was once thought to be can’t missed pro star, following his stellar amateur career, bur had suffered a considerable setback with the first-round KO loss to Dondon Sultan and a draw with Oligov.
The show was the second stage of the International Kostya Tszyu Cup. KT Group, Alexey Plotnikov and German Titov promoted.
