In a highly competitive and extremely close collision Russian-based Georgian David Gogiya (16-1, 4 KOs) edged always tough Armenian Mger Mkrtchian (23-3, 17 KOs, hailing originally from Gumni, Armenia) with a narrow twelve-round split decision on his way of capturing European (EBU) title in super middleweight division this Thursday in Casino Konti, St. Petersburg, Russia.
Gogiya started the fight in his original manner, using quick jab to score points and setting solid defense to avoid Mger’s punches. Light-hitting Georgian was unable to rock his opponent, however, his more frequent and successful aggression determined the outcome of the first half of the bout, as Armenian showed tendency to brawl and not to box. In the second part of collision Mkrtchian, ranked #4 WBA, #6 IBF, and #9 WBC, changed his plan a little bit, but his effort was too little, too late also. Two of three judges scored this bout in David’s favor: 117-112, 115-113 – while the third one gave it to Mkrtchian, who had struggled on Wednesday to make his weight prior the bout: 116-114. The champion’s next fight can be against tough Frenchman Jackson Chanet (26-1, 15 KOs) who failed to take part in show due to some promotional problems.
Valery Brudov (32-1, 24 KOs), #4 by WBA in cruiserweight, made his second comeback fight after dropping a wide decision to Virgill Hill for the WBA title this January. Brudov was effective, however, not impressive in his TKO victory over Latvian journeyman Roman Dabolins (4-5, 2 KOs). In another notable fight former amateur star Ali Ismailov of Azerbaijan (6-1-1, 5 KOs) had decked Oleg Dubiaha of Belarus (7-15, 3 KOs) several times before referee stopped the beating for good.
