22-years old Azerbaijani Azad Azizov, scored an impressive ninth round TKO win over ever dangerous Venezuelan KO artist Pedro Verdu (8-6-1, 8 KOs) to capture vacant TWBA lightweight belt this Thursday in casino “Conty”, St.Petersburg, Russia. That was the main event of the evening, promoted by Russian Alexander Yagupov. Azizov (9-2-1, 4 KOs now) was in control from the very beginning of the fight. In round two Azerbaijani rocked his opponent with the short combination and then sent him through the ropes and out of the ring. Verdu, younger brother of former two-time WBA titleholder Antonio Cermeno, however, survived brutal assault, but has never been close to regain the equilibrium in this fight. In round nine Azizov rocked his opponent one more time with the left to the body and finished him with the right-left combination to the head.
In the co-main event of the evening another Azerbaijani, former amateur star Ali Ismailov (4-1, 3 KOs) easily stopped experienced Russian Rauf Babaev (20-18-1, 12 KOs) in four rounds. Babaev, fighting for the first time in two years, was lucky to survive for so long despite being punished so brutally by Ismailov. There were no knockdowns, but the fight was finally stopped after the fourth round due to numerous cuts over Rauf’s head.
